Overwatch vs. Overwatch 2 Comparison – All differences and similarities

Overwatch 2 got announced at Blizzcon 2019 with a wonderful trailer. The new game is filled with new heroes and features for the franchise. Some new announcements will come to the original game as well, which might be confusing to keep track of. We made a list of all new things coming to Overwatch and what you can expect for each game. So let’s take a look at all the differences and similarities the games have.

Let’s dive into the similarities first

Blizzard announced a new game mode named Push, which will be available for Overwatch and the sequel. The game mode will be playable in Quick and Competitive play, making it really important for players that want to rank-up. In Push, an Objective in the middle of the map will move towards the enemy base, based on how many people of your team are at the point at a given time. If the enemy stands on the point when you are not there, the objective will move back to your base. In this mode, your advantage changes quick, with the objective moving after each team wipe. This should be a really exciting mode considering the possibility of comebacks and the use of momentum. The mode comes to both Overwatch and Overwatch 2.

Four new maps are coming to Overwatch and Overwatch 2 as well, with Toronto, the Canadian based map, being designed for the new mode Push. One of the new heroes, Sojourn, originates from this city, which is filled with maple trees, an ice rink and a metropolitan area. Next to that we will get a Rio de Janeiro Map, which is part of the PvE story as well, a Monte Carlo map which looks a lot like the real world location in Monaco and the Swedish city of Gothenburg, where Torbjorn and Brigitte are from.

Coming to both games as well are multiple new heroes, which haven’t all been announced yet. What we do know, is that Echo, whom we first saw in the Ashe trailer during last years Blizzcon, and Sojourn, whom we saw first during this years trailer, will come to both games. Multiple other heroes will be announced before Overwatch 2 releases, which might take a while.

Both games will also get a UI, Engine and Look update, giving the characters some updated designs, as well as the overall look and feel of the game. The images shown at Blizzcon are a first look at what Blizzard has in store for us, but they might change before the game releases. The new UI looks really clean though, and the character models look even prettier than they did before.

So let’s take a look at the features that Overwatch 2 players will get, but Overwatch players will be excluded from

The big new selling point for Overwatch 2, is the PvE mode. This will be exclusive for Overwatch 2 players to explore and learn more about the story. If you are a fan of Overwatch lore and the current PvE content which comes out during events, you will want to check this out.

To accompany these missions, there will be hero specific missions to even further deepen their story. These missions will focus on the background of your favorite heroes, making you use their skills to their fullest potential. These stories look extremely promising, and we can’t wait to try them out.

While playing these missions, you’ll gain experience for your characters, making them stronger and stronger. Your heroes have specific talents with which you can change and increase the power of their abilities. At Blizzcon we saw a couple examples of Tracers abilities increasing in strength. Her Pulse Bomb, for example, can cause secondary explosions on enemies that er hit by her ultimate ability.

Remember that all your achievements, skins and more will transfer from Overwatch to the sequel, so don’t be afraid, you won’t lose anything or have to start over.

So, these were all the similarities and differences as of now for Overwatch and Overwatch 2. We are especially excited for the new PvE mode coming to the game, but we want to know what you guys are looking forward too, if you are looking forward towards anything at all.
